Adolphe Willette was One of the great artists of Montmarte during the Belle Epoque, (Beautiful Era"). It was a period in French history starting in xxxx and ending when WWI began in xxxx. Also known as the ?Joy of Living? in contrast to 20th century hardships.
Born xxxx in Châlons-sur-Marne, France. Died at his home in Montmartre-Paris, France in xxxx. Adolphe Willette studied under Cabanel at the at the Beaux-Arts, in Paris.
Today Willette is collected for his posters, lithographs, etchings illustrating the chansonniers of Montmartre, and his part in the foundation, the decoration and the life of the famous cabaret Le Chat Noir. He began drawing in xxxx ,Pierrots and Parisiennes for the Courier Francais. His racy art sometimes transgressed the bounds of acceptable taste and he was prosecuted by the self-appointed champion of public morality, Senator Berenger.
