This was Gibson's first limited edition reissue of a xxxx Gibson Les Paul Custom. Some say these were made from left over '50's parts.
This guitar features a solid mahogany body (no maple cap) just like the original '54 Les Paul Custom, no volute, thin binding in the cutaway and a nice 59 style neck profile. Alnico V neck and P-90 bridge pickups. Nice smooth clean neck and ebony finger board. The original low profile fretless wonder frets are still in good condition and playable. Original waffle back tuners.
The guitar only weighs 8lbs. 9oz. There is some paint missing at the neck joint but it does not appear to ever have been broken or repaired.
The black finish has lots of smudges, dents, dings and scratches. It has remnants of a round sticker on the back of the headstock. It also had a long wooden bridge on it when I got it (leaving a barely visiable shadow on the top finish) with the original bridge in the case.
This is a very cool and rare guitar that has that classic xxxx's look and feel. It also includes a Gibson black hard shell case with purplish lining (not sure it is original).
They say Gibson used old xxxx's body blanks and xxxx's parts to build these 54 reissues which has contributed to their escalating value.
