With increasing industrialisation, London's population grew rapidly throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, and it was for some time in the late 19th and early 20th centuries the most populous city in the world until overtaken by New York in xxxx. Its population peaked at 8,615,245 in xxxx immediately before the outbreak of the Second World War, but had declined to 7,192,091 at the xxxx Census. However, the population then grew by just over a million between the xxxx and xxxx Censuses, to reach 8,173,941 in the latter enumeration.metropolitan area has a population of between 12 and 14 million depending on the definition used.[144][145] According to Eurostat, London is the most populous city and metropolitan area of the European Union and the second most populous in Europe (or third if Istanbul is included). The population density is 5,177 inhabitants per square kilometre (13,410 /sq mi),[147] more than ten times that of any other British region.[148] In terms of population, London is the 19th largest city and the 18th largest metropolitan region in the world. It is also ranked 4th in the world in number of billionaires (United States Dollars) residing in the city.[149] London ranks as one of the most expensive cities in the world, alongside Tokyo and Moscow.[150]According to the Office for National Statistics, based on the xxxx Census estimates, 59.8 per cent of the 8,173,941 inhabitants of London were White, with 44.9 per cent White British, 2.2 per cent White Irish, 0.1 per cent gypsy/Irish traveller and 12.1 per cent classified as Other White.20.9 per cent of Londoners are of Asian and mixed-Asian descent. 19.7 per cent of Londoners are of full Asian descent, with those of mixed-Asian heritage comprising 1.2 of the population. Indians account for 6.6 per cent of the population, followed by Pakistanis and Bangladeshis at 2.7 per cent each. Church attendance continues on a long, slow, steady decline, according to Church of England statistics.[162]London is also home to sizeable Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, and Jewish communities. Many Muslims live in Tower Hamlets and Newham; the most important Muslim edifice is London Central Mosque on the edge of Regent's Park.[163] Following the oil boom, increasing numbers of wealthy Middle-Eastern Muslims have based themselves around Mayfair and Knightsbridge in west London.[164][165] London is home to the largest mosque in western Europe, the Baitul Futuh Mosque, of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. The public transport network is administered by Transport for London (TfL) and is one of the most extensive in the world. Cycling is an increasingly popular way to get around London. The London Cycling Campaign lobbies for better provision.[187]The lines that formed the London Underground, as well as trams and buses, became part of an integrated transport system in xxxx when the London Passenger Transport Board (LPTB) or London Transport was created. Eight airports use the word London in their name, but most traffic passes through six of these. London Heathrow Airport, in Hillingdon, West London, is the busiest airport in the world for international traffic, and is the major hub of the nation's flag carrier, British Airways.[191] In March xxxx its fifth terminal was opened.[192] There were plans for a third runway and a sixth terminal however these were cancelled by the Coalition Government on 12 May xxxx.[193] In September xxxx a personal rapid transit system was opened at Heathrow to connect to a nearby car park.[194]Stansted Airport, situated north east of London in Essex, is the main UK hub for Ryanair and Luton Airport to the north of London in Bedfordshire, caters mostly for low-cost short-haul flights.[196][197] London City Airport, the smallest and most central airport, is focused on business travellers, with a mixture of full service short-haul scheduled flights and considerable business jet traffic.[198]London Southend Airport, east of London in Essex, is a smaller, regional airport that mainly caters for low-cost short-haul flights. These run up to every 20 minutes between Embankment Pier and North Greenwich Pier. The Woolwich Ferry, with 2.5 million passengers every year,[204] is a high-frequency service linking the North and South Circular Roads. Other operators also run both commuter and tourist boat services in London. The London Underground ? all of which is now commonly referred to as the Tube, though originally this designation referred only to the deep-level lines, as distinct from the sub-surface lines ? is the oldest,[205] and second longest[35] metro system in the world, dating from xxxx. The system serves 270 stations[206] and was formed from several private companies, including the world's first underground electric line, the City and South London Railway.[207]Over three million journeys are made every day on the Underground network, over 1 billion each year.[208] An investment programme is attempting to reduce congestion and improve reliability, including £6.5 billion (?7.7 billion) spent before the xxxx Summer Olympics.[209] London has been commended as the city with the best public transport.[210] The Docklands Light Railway, which opened in xxxx, is a second, more local metro system using smaller and lighter tram-type vehicles which serve Docklands and Greenwich.
