I was picked in the first-class team from [Dhaka's] first division league. It is very tough to play first-class cricket directly from that level. I thank [Zafrul] Ehsan sir who believed in me. The night before my debut, he told me he had had to battle to put me in the playing XI. After hearing that, I told myself I have to perform, but not by taking pressure. I cannot lose sleep over it. I have to play normally.After two good seasons in the National Cricket League, Gazi made it to the National Cricket Academy. In his first four-day match, in South Africa in August xxxx, he took 11 wickets, including a first innings hat-trick (in a seven-for). Two months later he scored his maiden first-class century - a 99-ball 140 against Khulna Division. After another productive season, Gazi expected to get noticed.Four weeks later, he put in a performance that grabbed everyone's attention. In the xxxx-13 NCL season opener for Barisal Division, he struck a hundred and took a hat-trick in his seven-wicket haul in Khulna's second innings. We fielded the first day and nearly half the second day. Almost immediately afterwards, I had to bat. I was middling the ball very well. I got to 50, so I thought, let's take a chance. I took it, and I got the hundred. Taposh Ghosh, Rubel Hossain and Al-Amin Hossain were my hat-trick wickets in that game. I don't know how it happened. I got into the national team after I had done this, so it felt great. I had done something, it is a record, and I was hearing people talk about me as a prospect for the senior team," Gazi said.Barisal wicketkeeper Shahin Hossain, who caught Ghosh and stumped Al-Amin in that match, recalled the hat-trick. "He is a good bowler and doesn't miss the spot often. We lost the game, but someone later told me that he is the first player from Bangladesh to score a ton and take a hat-trick in the same first-class match," Shahin said.Gazi was picked in the Test team to play West Indies. A few days before his debut, the captain, Mushfiqur Rahim, informed him that he would be opening the attack. The greatest pressure was to bowl to Chris Gayle in the first over of a Test match," Gazi said. "It was my first over in Test cricket. Before that, when I made my BPL debut, I had felt the pressure. I was terrified at the thought of playing on live television. My performance suffered as a result, and I vowed never to do such a thing again.With that over to Gayle, Gazi became the first offspinner to bowl the first over of a Test on debut, and the first debutant spinner to do so in 104 years. He still remembers the first ball: Gayle ran down the wicket and slammed him for a huge six over long-on. But Gazi got Gayle out in his third over, and ended up with nine wickets in the match.By his third Test, in Sri Lanka, Gazi was the team's bowling leader. The pressure was immense for a young cricketer, but he ended the series as Bangladesh's highest wicket-taker. However, in Zimbabwe after that, he struggled to get a decent spell, and in England, playing for the A side this August, he felt lost.I needed to struggle somewhere, and it happened in England. I wouldn't know what I was doing wrong. After I returned from the tour, I did a lot of spot-bowling on my own. I understood what areas needed improvement, and I worked on them. The senior players helped me through this period. There was also talk about my fitness. I really wanted to prove myself, and I think I needed the Chittagong Test to go my way.If Gazi hadn't buckled down to bat on the fourth morning in Chittagong, New Zealand would have dominated and probably forced a win on the placid track.My mind was fresh before I had gone out to bat. I had just prayed, so I was feeling good. My only target was to bat as long as Nasir [Hossain] is in the middle. After I defended the first ball, I felt confident because I had middled it. During the innings I charged the spinners. My mind was set on not playing a cross-bat shot - just to play straight. As much as the hat-trick, I was happy with the hundred. I helped the team in a vital moment, and I batted with the tail. [Robiul Islam] Shiblu kept telling me that I will get you through to 50 and 100. I didn't play rough shots, only tried to play deliveries within my reach.After the Test, Gazi went home to celebrate Eid with his parents. He travelled 82 nautical miles, from Dhaka to Patuakhali at the southern tip of the country, on board Kuakata-1, a sturdy ship that is often overloaded as it meanders down Bangladesh's rivers. It is an unusual way for a Bangladesh cricketer to go home between Tests.Those who have played with Gazi say he doesn't like to be told how to do things. It probably explains why at the age of 19, having faced several rejections in age-group cricket, he decided to stick to the game. I had been a standby for nine years. When I didn't make it to the Under-19 World Cup, I wanted to see what happens in the end. I had given so much time in my life to cricket, I just wanted to see what is there when it all finishes," he said.Credit goes to Gazi for not giving up on the game. He has lit up a path for others like him. Players coming through will know it is possible to make it big as long as their belief in themselves is as strong as his. Gazi has simply been a revelation for Bangladesh Cricket considering the fact that Bangladesh always produces left arm spinners and hardly any quality off spinners. He will clearly have a successful career and deservedly so considering how difficult it was for him to achieve his dream of becoming a cricketer during his childhood and now his wonderful success for the national team thus far. Only 22 years old with immense talent and desire to succeed will make him Bangladesh's next world class player and bring the national team with tonnes of success. Calm down kids. A great debut, of course, but he has since then failed repeatedly, regardless of format. He has consistently failed to live up to any sort of standard for an international batsman. His average of 24 (from 61 tests! 61!) is not the sort of thing that deserves praise. for anyone with aspirations for battign higher than 8. BD have not been able to become a strong test team in the 12+ years they have played but they have been able to produce some amazing players who have made terrific records. We all remember Ashraful as the youngest to score a century on debut and that was against Murali. IIRC, Ashraful's SR in that knock was quite high too. Then we have Mahmadullah who scored a 100 batting 10th or 11th in a test match, that is amazing too. BD already have Shakib Al Hasan who is quite a superb all rounder and now we have Sohab Gazi who has a hat trick and a 100 in the same match.A team does not become strong over night. A strong team is almost always composed of strong players. BD just need to ensure their domestic structure is fine tuned to produce strong players simultaneously. They need talent spotters in their board.If BD can get 2-3 more such players then BD will improve tremendously in all formats of the game. Bangladesh cricket without Shakib Al Hasan today would be like Pakistan cricket without Imran Khan or West Indies without Garry Sobers. Shakib is the biggest star in Bangladesh in any sphere of public life. And like for any celebrity in the subcontinent, the trappings are ever present. There are commercials to shoot, functions to attend and ribbons to cut. And in between are T20 leagues all over the world to play in.But this month Shakib is going back to the contest that put him on the world stage. In xxxx, Bangladesh beat New Zealand 4-0 at home. It could be dismissed as just an ODI series, but it was a moment in Bangladesh cricket when the world sat up and took notice of their ability. There had been victories in the past, most notably against Australia in xxxx, but this win said that Bangladesh could not only beat a higher-ranked side, they could do it four times.In the series Shakib's batting average was 97.70, which included a century and a fifty. His 11 wickets came at 15.90, he took a four-for and his strike rate was 20.10. Shakib was a big name in Bangladesh cricket even before the New Zealand series. He had an excellent bowling record in Tests, with seven five-wicket hauls, and had crossed the xxxx-run mark in 21 Tests, with one hundred. In ODIs he had a similar batting average but he bowled even better. In T20s, he was emerging as a utility player - he still had a way to go with his batting, but bowling-wise he was up there with the best spinners in the world.Two and a half years since, he remains Bangladesh's go-to guy. In nine Tests in that period, he has averaged 47.35 and picked up 31 wickets, with two five-wicket hauls. In 31 ODIs he has taken 41 wickets and scored xxxx runs at 37.40. Mashrafe's plethora of injuries meant he never could express himself properly, while Ashraful remained an unfulfilled talent. Tamim and Mushfiqur have time on their sides, but Shakib's stardom has eclipsed theirs, though he started a year after Mushfiqur and only a few months before Tamim. I agree that Shakib is best that Bangladesh has produced (by a long way I might add), but comparing Shakib to Garry Sobers or Imran Khan? You've got to be joking. If that's the case you may as well throw Simon Katch into the mix. A country of over 150million people, that is cricket crazy, has only produced one world-level player. That's a massive shame. Bangladesh has massive potential as a cricketing force, but the administration holds them back. Priorities are so distorted from the PR disaster of the BPL to their continual production of lifeless, boring Test match wickets. Bangladesh does itself no favours. There is a huge market to be exploited as the country develops economically, but those at the top are unqualified and selfish. Neither is hardly high quality by itself but when you put them together, it is more than acceptable and a number of countries would like to have a player of such numbers in their team so I think it is fair to say that he at least approaches a world class. If you consider the shorter formats, his numbers are more encouraging and, given the value of an allrounder in shorter formats, he is definitely world class. Still, the fact that he is such a towering figure worthy of comparison to Sobers and Imran in Bangladesh is only a testament to a. (I am sad to say this but) the poor overall quality of BD cricketers and b. the increasing importance to shorter formats in general but especially in countries that do not have the right players to succeed in Tests. Between September xxxx and June xxxx, he scored xxxx runs in 12 Tests at an average of 53.20, with three centuries and a highest of 196. During that period, he was Pakistan's highest run-getter. A year later, his drop in form has been so steep that there have been widespread calls for him to be dropped from the squad for the series against South Africa in October.On the basis of his recent stats, it's clear that Pakistan need to look elsewhere for a Test opener: in his last ten innings, Hafeez scored 102 runs at an average of 10.20. He has admitted that he has had a poor run, and it'll surprise no one if his name isn't in the squad for that series.Clearly, Hafeez's problem has been facing the new ball outside Asia. He has played all his 66 innings in Test cricket as an opener, and in Asia, he has averaged 43.42 from 39 innings, with four hundreds in 20 Tests; in other continents, his average drops to 20.80 in 14 Tests, with only two 50-plus scores in 27 innings. His ODI record outside Asia looks better at first glance - an average of 33.71, which is higher than his career average, and five hundreds in 58 matches - but that's only because of the runs scored against Zimbabwe and Ireland. Against the top sides, his average outside Asia in ODIs drops to 25.79 in 46 games. Hafeez's issues against the new ball outside Asia isn't unique to him, though his is an extreme case of a problem that has plagued most openers from the subcontinent. Tests in Australia, England and South Africa have always been the most challenging for batsmen from the subcontinent, and especially so for the openers. Sunil Gavaskar is the only opener from the subcontinent to score more than xxxx runs in these countries: in the 26 Tests he played in Australia and England (he didn't play at all in South Africa), Gavaskar averaged 45.04, about six runs lower than his career average. More recently, while India's batsmen have done better than other subcontinent teams on these tours, the difference has largely been in the performances of the middle-order batsmen; the openers have struggled almost equally. The table below lists the averages of the openers from each of the subcontinent teams in Tests they've played in Australia, England and South Africa since xxxx. It's interesting that Sri Lanka's openers have averaged the most, Bangladesh are second, India third, and Pakistan fourth (though all the averages lie in a narrow band between 27.90 and 30.70. That clearly shows there's little to choose between the openers of these teams, though India's middle order has been superior to the other teams during this period. The difference that Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman made to the Indian batting is clearly visible from the table below. Thanks largely to them, India's middle order averaged almost 40 in Australia, England and South Africa, while none of the other subcontinent teams touched 33. The Indian batsmen scored 34 hundreds from 52 Tests, while Pakistan's middle order managed only 18 from 47. In the openers' category, though, there's little to separate the four teams. Sri Lanka are ahead of the other three sides, thanks to Tillakaratne Dilshan - who averages 40.46 from eight Tests - and Marvan Atapattu, who averaged 34.44. Bangladesh's top performer has been Tamim Iqbal, with 346 runs from eight innings, including two hundreds in England, while Hannan Sarkar was also consistent in his six innings in South Africa and Australia.The numbers for India's openers aren't as impressive as their middle order, largely because Virender Sehwag hasn't dazzled consistently in these conditions. He does have a few sparkling innings in Australia, England and South Africa, but his overall average of 34.60 when opening in these countries is well below his career average of 49.34. Gautam Gambhir has struggled too, averaging 32.67 from 15 innings, as has Wasim Jaffer, who averages less than 22. The better performers for India have all been batsmen who weren't openers to begin with - Ravi Shastri, Rahul Dravid and Dinesh Karthik all averaged more than 40 in that role.Similarly, the pickings have been relatively slim for Pakistan as well. The classy Saeed Anwar scored a century in each of these countries and averaged 41 from 12 Tests, while Mohsin Khan had terrific tours of England and Australia in the early xxxxs. Majid Khan, Aamer Sohail and Sadiq Mohammad were the others with 35-plus averages when opening in these countries. Among the current lot, Taufeeq Umar's stats stand out - in six innings, he has scored 298 at an average touching 50. Imran Farhat, though, has been poor: he has opened 34 times in these countries and hasn't scored a hundred - he averages 23.17 in these innings. (Click here for the list of Pakistan openers' stats in Australia, England and South AfricaHowever, even when compared to these performances, Hafeez scrapes the bottom of the barrel: among all subcontinent openers who've opened at least 12 times in these countries, only Pankaj Roy (average 13.70) has a poorer average as opener than Hafeez's 18.23. At the moment every single game is an overseas game. If Cricket is unlikely to return to Pakistan then Pakistan should have a longer term agreement with Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Then Pakistan should move some of their Domestic Competitions too. In order to acclimatise the next generation. What is interesting in the openers since xxxx list is that dinesh karthik is there @ 46 odd average from 4 tests.. he still doesnt get the chance :-(. Agreed that maybe on a extended run he might not keep this average.. but we will never know.Hanif name in the low scoring list is surprising as he is regarded as one of the finest batsman from subcontinent. He played against some of the very best bowling in a very trying conditions. We just can't compare players like Dravid and Hanif against Salman Butt. Tamim and Suhail who has better averages but they are not the same class. These statistics are very misleading in a sports like Cricket which has so many factors and different playing conditions.If you go deep in Taufiq Umar's Stats he is averaging 70 against SA in four innings and made 280runs. So, he is a very good choice for Series against SA.
